Hecate, a multifaceted deity from ancient mythology, has been revered across various cultures for centuries. Her origins can be traced back to the Greek pantheon, where she was primarily associated with magic, witchcraft, and the moon. The worship of Hecate involved various rituals, including the offering of food and other gifts at crossroads, which were sacred to her. She is fond of those who are eager to show her the honour and respect that she deserves, and those who are not afraid to step into the darkness of their shadow self in order to be enlightened.

She is often portrayed as a lover of dogs and protector of children, and many pictures depict her surrounded by black dogs in particular. Due to this, it is commonly understood that those who carry out acts of kindness towards both dogs and children in particular will be favoured by her.

However, working with Hecate is a partnership; She will not take kindly to being called upon as a common 'genie' or granter of wishes. It's often noted that you must offer something in return when calling upon Hecate for help.

Making an Altar for Hecate

An altar is the perfect place to create a sacred space for you to leave offerings for Mother Hecate. You can include a multitude of different items unique to yourself and your relationship with Hecate.

For instance, in previous workings with Hecate, I became accustomed to noticing more crows and ravens after my meditations, which I likened to be a conclusion of those workings. One day in particular, I had been thinking a lot about her and I entered an antique shop for the first time in many years.

I was browsing around and all of a sudden turned around to see a huge taxidermy crow that was almost in line with my shoulder. I took this as a sign and ended up buying the crow, which is now placed on her altar. As you work with Mother Hecate you will come to notice signs and synchronicities tailored to you and your personal understandings of your relationship, so these types of offerings are a great way to honour that.

Things to Consider When Setting Up an Altar for Hecate

Although it isn't a requirement to have a fully laden altar if you don't have the space, or maybe because you live with people who may not agree with your spiritual practice due to religious reasons etc., one thing that has been commonly stated is that Hecate does not like to share her altar space with other deities and prefers to have her own altar set apart. This could even just be a small jewellery box where you keep a small candle and small crystals correlating to her. As long as you are offering her the mutual respect she deserves she will not hold this against you.

Offerings to Honour Hecate

Food Offerings

Hecate is often associated with the nocturnal and the mysterious, making food offerings a fitting way to honour her. Common offerings include:

Honey - You might leave a small dish of honey outside during the dark of the moon, or on a dish on your altar if you have one.

Garlic - Known for its protective traits, garlic can also serve as an offering. You could leave a few cloves at your altar or create a garlic braid as a tribute.

Black Candles - These are often associated with protection, release, and banishment, aligning well with Hecate’s attributes, and are recognised as a preferred colour of candle when using as an offering, or when carrying out workings with Hecate.

White Candles - Representing purity, intuition, and new beginnings, white candles can also be significant when invoking her blessings.
